Jesuit On The Holy Father

He's Austrian [sic, recte German], and likes looking back to the past. He likes the smells and bells. I do, too. I suspect there's more to it than that, but I don't know.

Technically, Fr. Massa is wrong in claiming that Pope Benedict is an Austrian. But in a wider sense, he is absolutely right.

Pope Benedict comes from a town something like 20 - at most 30 miles - from the Austrian border. His father was a customs officer. He's a Bavarian; Bavarians are to Germany a bit like Texans are or were to the US, a very large state with a very distinctive culture, which just happens to be much closer to Austrian culture than mainstream Germany culture.
