provincial on the July 31, the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits.
Father Adolfo Nicolas, S.J., Superior General of the Society of Jesus, appointed Father Sheehan Provincial of the New England Province on Feb. 19, to succeed Father Thomas J. Regan, S.J., whose six-year term had ended.

Blogger Note: The New England Province faces a tough prospect of falling numbers of Jesuits in the province, recruiting vocations and staffing reductions are a big issues.

I know Fr. Sheehan from my time as a Jesuit scholastic. He was a medical doctor before entering the Society, and he is a good man.

Fr. Sheehan needs our prayers as he takes on this new responsibility with its many challenges.
