Jesuit On Pro-Life Catholic Woman Christine O'Donnell

Christine O'Donnell
There's a story circulating on the internet today about an comment newly-minted Republican candidate for the Senate, Sarah Pal..er, sorry, Christine O'Donnell made in 1998 on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher.
Now, before I talk about the story, a moment on the soap box. Seriously, media/online blogger people, I know she's freaking you out. Ventriloquist's dummies are always scary.
But this was 13 years ago, people, and frankly, is it really that nutty? She didn't say she would tell the Nazis there were Jews there (although that's how you're spinning it). She said God would help her find a way out. You want to call that naive, great, although you ask me, Nazis or the like come to your door, tell me you're not hoping God, however you imagine God, would help you find a way out.
Link (here) to blog post entitled, Nazi's in Delaware by Fr. Jim McDermott, S.J. at America Magazines, In All Things.

"tell me you're not hoping God, however you imagine God, would help you find a way out." If a priest can't believe that The Lord might very well help...I don't know where we stand as a Church.I always believed, and was taught to put my faith in HIM. Maybe I understood incorrectly or maybe not. The implications of the upper line are huge. But then, those words are coming from a Jesuit...

You are absolutely right, anon-2. In both the Old and the New Testament we find countless instances where we are led to believe that we should place all of our trust in God. Furthermore, we are told it's foolish to do otherwise. Philosophical issues or math problems cannot be an exception to a Personal God.

The comment by Joe Cleary (Comment # 6 in the cited AMERICA article) was right on. Yet God may not provide such an elegant philosophical solution to everyone. He will help each, I would think, in the manner in which one is best able to receive His help, which makes the whole matter indeed complex.

Furthermore, Scripture warns us not to tempt God with sinful requests, like asking to be saved from suicide.

I found the post at America completely unnecessary and in poor taste.

Joseph -- Fr. Jim McDermott's, S.J. disparaging of a fellow Catholic for her trust in God is indeed strange.

However, the question about lying to a Nazi is worthwhile pondering, don't you think?

I would argue that there are different answers for different people.

This is not relativism - there are different correct answers for different people.

Father entitled his post, "NAZI's in Delaware". Insinuating an incorrect analogy of Sarah Palin,Christine O'Donnell and The Tea Party to NAZI's.

Whether O'Donnell is currently Catholic is a matter of dispute - she left the Church for a while, became an Evangelical, and now claims that she attends both Catholic and Evangelical services. To describe her as a "Catholic woman" without describing the complexities of her religious background could be misleading, particularly to devout Catholics who may not want to support a candidate who left the Catholic Church to become a Protestant and now seems to be some kind of indifferentist who wants to Catholic and Protestant at the same time.

"America Magazine" makes me want to vomit. Pretensious to the max.
