Standing in the church of St Francis Xavier Catholic Church the former Jesuit seminary at Tepotzotlén, Mexico, the eye is dazzled by a seething mass of elaborate wood-carved ornament, coated in flashy gold leaf. These are early 18-century altarpieces, five of them, reaching from floor to ceiling and dominating the church interior. The effect is overwhelming.
