Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (pictured seated) said in a news conference in Chile on Monday that "many psychologists and psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relation between celibacy and ped@philia."
They do believe, however, "that there is a relation between h@mosexuality and ped@philia," he said. "That is true. ... That is the problem."....
"The behavior of the priests in this case, the negative behavior, is very serious, is scandalous," the cardinal said. Bill Donohue, head of the Catholic League, similarly pointed at h@mosexuality last month as the true problem behind the child abuse s@x scandal. In a full-page ad taken out in The New York Times, he called it a "h@mos@xual crisis," claiming that "eighty percent of the victims of priestly s@xual abuse are male."

Fr. James Martin, S.J. weighs in on the subject, this is an excerpt of a larger post at In All Things, the blog of the Jesuit published America magazine.
But even noting that many of the victims were adolescent boys, and that some priests with a h@mosexual orientation preyed on them, you have to distinguish between a some g@y priests and the vast majority of g@y priests, who lead healthy celibate lives. That is, the actions of a certain percentage of g@y priests should not condemn all of them, particularly on a matter this serious. That is simple stereotyping.
One reason that there aren't more public examples to counter the argument, of course, is that many celibate g@y priests are unable, unwilling or simply not permitted to speak about their own orientations.
(See "The Church and the Homosexual Priest" in America.) In the absence of public models of healthy g@y priests, therefore, the image of the g@y priest-ped@phile predominates, and so can lead to such misunderstanding.
