Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was one of the Church’s great missionaries.
In 1979, the Jesuit magazine America called him
“the greatest evangelizer in the history of the Catholic Church in the United States. He lavished personal attention on both rich and poor.”A reporter observed in 1952:
“The bishop’s official date book, listing names of those he plans to see (‘I will see anybody with a spiritual problem’), regularly bulges with eight hundred to a thousand entries.”Thousands attended his convert classes. No one, of course, could count the hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, who came into the Church, wholly or in part, as a result of Sheen’s publications and media and personal appearances.

You will not read that in America anymore
From my home in Arizona, I watched the inspiring anniversary mass for Archbishop Sheen on EWTN. Archbishop Timothy Dolan gave a cogent tribute in his homily. The Jesuit saying, "eloquentia perfecta", came to mind as I listened to his homily.
remembering Archbishop Sheen brought back memories of seeing him on TV and being inspired by his words. Would that we see another Fulton Sheen in our lifetime.
i am reminded of Fulton Sheen when i hear or read James Martin .
Thanks for this article. His workswords can't be pigeon holed easily into earthly ideologies. However, almost everything he preached was in some way related to Christ crucified. In your link they referenced his written works, yet, they conveniently ommitted two books. Treasures in Clay and Those Mysterious Priest's. The latter should be a required course offering in seminaries.
"When I stand up to talk, people listen to me; they will follow what I have to say. Is it any power of mine? Of course not. St. Paul says, 'What have you that you have not received and you who have received, why do you glory as if you had not?' But the secret of my power is that I have never in fifty-five years missed spending an hour in the presence of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. That's where the power comes from. That's where sermons are born. That's where every good thought is conceived."

Sheen--a big fan of Vatican II & ecumentalism!
Surely if Sheen is a fan of Vatican he must be the devil
Bishop Sheen would have been crystal clear about faithfully supporting and believing in all dogmas and doctrines of the Church in our day. Fr. Martin is non-committal and wishy-washy about some of the more important ones; wishy-washiness does not lead to sanctity, which does not lead to venerability, etc.
Fr. Martin is a joke-teller in a Roman Collar. A 'c'atholic David Letterman.
Fr. Martin is no Bishop Sheen.
