Paul Levinson is a professor of communications and media studies at Fordham University in New York City. This is his quote,
McCain did himself no good by any standard on abortion, first saying he would not apply any "litmus" test to his Supreme Court appointments (this will win him no thanks from his right-to-life base) but later brushing aside, incredibly, a woman's health as a valid reason to have an abortion.

Pro-choice doesn't mean pro-abortion, Joe.
Is it too difficult to understand this?
48,589,993: total abortions since pro-choice decision by the Supreme Court in 1973.
In 2003, with pro-choice legislation in place, more children died from abortion than Americans died in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean, Vietnam and Gulf Wars combined.
Just like pro-secession didn’t mean pro-slavery, pro-choice does not equal pro-abortion on paper. But wake up and smell the coffee!
jesuit
do you really think Repubblican Party will make abortion unlawful? NOPE.
But wake up and smell the coffee!
US as Titanic sink and your only issue is abortion????????
I never said a word about the Republican party. And for the record, I didn't say I agreed with Joseph's take on Paul Levinson's blog post either.
I am, however, offering my opinion on the "pro-choice doesn't mean pro-abortion" line of argument. Feel free to try to change my mind on that one.
Dear Anonymous,
I did not say anything about Republicans or Democrats. I pointed out that a professor said a stupid and morally repugnant comment, the professor has an obligation to uphold the standards of one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in the country and that is administered and spiritually guided by the greatest Catholic order in the Church, The Society of Jesus has a 500 year history dedicated to the preservation of life at all stages. Sorry but, pro-choice means pro-death!
I see - so, you have no interest in saving the life of the mother? Because that's what McCain's sarcasm about the "health" of the mother puts at risk, when taken to its logical conclusion.
I'm also saddened to see that you don't have the courtesy to discuss views with which you disagree, without resorting to words like "stupid".
I certainly try to teach my students at Fordham to be a little more courteous to different viewpoints.
Dear Paul,
Abortion is intrinsically evil. Your view is not the the view of the Catholic Church. You are employed by a Catholic institution. Your public position tarnishes the reputation of Fordham.
You should be ashamed of the way you address and converse with people.
Fordham University is more enlightened than you - the university does not require its faculty to have the same interpretation as you, or for that matter, anyone else.
And, in any case, what I write on my blog is distinct from what I say and teach in the classroom.
The truth is that for some Catholics, the abortion issue has never been a comfortable cause. It's embarrassing. It's not the kind of social justice they like to talk about.
It interferes with their natural political alliances. And because the homicides involved in abortion are ''little murders'' - the kind of private, legally protected murders that kill conveniently unseen lives - it's easy to look the other way.
The abortion lobby has fought every compromise and every legal restriction on abortion, every step of the way. Apparently they believe in their convictions more than some of us Catholics believe in ours. And I think that's an indictment of an entire generation of American Catholic leadership.
This a quote from Archbishop Chaput's "Little Murders" speech, you can find the full text of his address
