Celebration of Sin at USF/Pepperdine Game

On Saturday, January 4 the men’s basketball team of the (Jesuit) University of San Francisco faced off against the Pepperdine Waves at USF’s War Memorial gym. The game was also billed as an “LGBTQ Community Celebration.” The “Upcoming Events” page on the USF Dons website read “Featuring Performances by the SF Gay Men’s Chorus and Cheer SF. LGBTQ community leaders will be recognized. For $10 tickets use promo code EQUALITY at checkout.” Since the “LGBTQ Community” defines itself by fornication with persons of the same-sex, an “LGBTQ Community Celebration” is by definition a celebration of sin.

The University of San Francisco is a private Jesuit university that was founded in 1855. Even though it's not ranked very high at #106 on US News' list, students are drawn here for its great location right near the Golden Gate Bridge and for its small class sizes. The average mid-career salary is high at $92,400.

Today At The University of San Francisco

Barbara Garcia

On Friday, May 17, the (Jesuit) University of San Francisco will hold the 2013 commencement exercises for Barbara Garcia, director of health at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Ms. Garcia was appointed by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom in 2010. She is an open lesbian. Garcia is probably best known to the wider public following national news coverage of a decision of the San Francisco board of supervisors that the city’s Healthy San Francisco  program—that is, the taxpayers—will, in addition to coverage for abortion and contraception, provide free “gender reassignment surgery.” their School of Nursing and Health Professions. As director, Garcia will be in charge of implementing this program. On November 10, 2012 Gay Star News reported “San Francisco will now offer mastectomies (removal of the breasts), genital reconstructions and other surgeries recommended for some transgender people under the city’s 5-year-old universal health care plan.” Garcia justified the procedures: “The community felt the exclusion on Healthy San Francisco was discriminatory and we wanted to change that as the first step.”

As the San Francisco program shows, there are many people who take gender reassignment surgery seriously, rather than seeing it as a mutilation born of mental illness. To put “gender reassignment surgery” into a proper perspective, let’s examine an identical syndrome called Body Integrity Identity Disorder. The noted bioethicist Wesley Smith, writing at the Human Exceptionalism blog at National Review, describes it: “BIID, also known as ‘amputee wannabe,’ is a terrible mental illness in which sufferers obsesses and truly anguish about becoming an amputee–which they perceive as their true identities.” He went on to explain his experience at something called the “transhumanist” conference:

Ton Of Arrupe

A one-ton granite statue of Jesuit Father Pedro Arrupe, the 28th superior general of the Society of Jesus, University of San Francisco in March as part of the university’s Pedro Arrupe Week celebration. The life-sized statue is based on a well-known photograph of Fr. Arrupe kneeling in prayer. 

It was carved in China under the direction of Jesuit Father Tom Lucas, university professor of Art and Architecture. Fr. Arrupe served as superior general of the Jesuits from 1965 to 1983 and is renowned for his dedication to faith and social justice. 

He educated students to be men and women for others and instilled in his students a sense of faith that does justice. Today, the University of San Francisco counts these among its core values, and a residence hall, immersion program, living-learning community and social justice program are named for Fr. Arrupe at USF.

University Of San Francisco Promotes Anti-Catholic To Theology Chair

Vincent Pizzuto of the University of San Francisco was still using the term “we” to describe same-sex attracted Catholics. While the “we” indicates Pizzuto considered himself a Catholic at that time, it is questionable how deeply that identification was felt: four months later, in July of 2006, Pizzuto was ordained a priest in the Celtic Christian Church, a church not in communion with the Rome.  At the time the “Alienated Catholics” presentation was given, the pastor of St. Agnes parish was Father Cameron Ayers, SJ.  Ayers, like Pizzuto, has since left the Church, and is now an assisting priest at San Francisco’s Holy Innocents Episcopal Church. At the time of his ordination, Father Pizzuto was serving as an assistant professor in the department of theology and religious studies  at the (Jesuit) University of San Francisco, a nominally Catholic university. Sometime between February 2011 and October 2012 (according to the department webpage), despite his public alienation from the Catholic Church, 

Pizzuto has been promoted and he now serves as the chair of the theology department. Pizzuto’s faculty webpage at USF links directly to the webpage of the New Skellig Community  Church, where he is the presider. New Skellig is a member community of the Celtic Christian Church, the body into which Pizzuto was ordained. 

The Church Statements listed on the Celtic Christian Church’s webpage are only three: Homosexuality and Same-Sex Relationship; Supporting Document on the Question of Homosexuality and Same-Sex Relationships; and Church Statement Concerning Abortion. From the Homosexuality and Same-Sex Relationships  page: “If a homosexual couple wishes to make a public commitment to each other, the Church blesses such a desire and celebrates it by means of a marriage ceremony presided over by one of its clergypersons.” Pizzuto himself writes on the New Skellig Community Weddings page: “Because the Celtic Christian Church is a canonically independent catholic church whose governing principles prioritize the ‘Law of Love’ above rules and regulations, we are especially sensitive to couples who have been alienated from their church of origin, or who find that their marriage is unjustly prohibited in some Christian institutions. This is often the case, for example, among couples who are: Previously divorced; Same-gendered;  Inter-religious… In all cases, Father Vincent works personally with each couple to guide them in creating a dignified ceremony that genuinely expresses the couple’s relationship, commitment and spirituality.”

Bishop Salvatore Cordileone

The appointment of Bishop Cordileone represents a significant departure from recent appointments in the archdiocese of San Francisco. Recent elevations to the local hierarchy– Archbishop George Niederauer, and Auxiliary Bishops William Justice and Robert McElroy–all seemed to have come from within a circle close to Cardinal William Levada. That is not the case with Bishop Cordileone. The selection indicates a recognition, at the highest levels of the Vatican, of the dangerous drift of the Archdiocese in recent years. Instances of that drift have been reported regularly in CalCatholic. 

They include Catholic Charities of San Francisco’s “gay adoptions” fiasco of 2006; the creation of parishes where homosexuality is openly celebrated, notably San Francisco’s Most Holy Redeemer; the loss of Catholic identity and outright anti-Catholic teaching at the (Jesuit) University of San Francisco; not to mention (as Palmo notes) the ongoing tolerance of misstatements of Catholic teaching by the city’s Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. 

The archdiocese of San Francisco covers three counties, San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin. While there is a strong pro-Catholic and pro-family movement, exemplified by the Walk for Life West Coast, San Francisco itself is well known for its activist homosexual political structure and anti-Catholic attitude. Some of those attitudes are even found in parishes and certainly in the (Jesuit) University of San Francisco. In 2008, more than 80% of San Francisco voters supported Barack Obama. San Francisco also has the fewest number of children of any comparable city in the United States.

Abortion Advocate To Speak At The University Of San Francisco

California Catholic Daily is also reporting that USF’s School of Law’s commencement speaker Goodwin Liu, an associate justice of the Supreme Court of California, has supported abortion rights and same-sex “marriage.” 

Liu was infamously nominated to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2011 by President Obama, but Senate Republicans rejected the nomination because of the extreme nature of Liu’s views. 

But those same views didn’t stop California’s Governor Jerry Brown from nominating Liu to the state’s Supreme Court. LifeNews.com reported that Liu is a “liberal abortion supporter” and has served on the boards of directors of the American Constitution Society, the ACLU of Northern California, and the National Women’s Law Center. The NWLC states on its website that it’s “working to ensure that women have access to abortion care by protecting and advancing this fundamental right.” Liu was also said by the Los Angeles Times to be “a supporter of gay rights,” including support for same-sex “marriage.”

A Bad Case Of Tonsillitis At The University Of San Francisco

Democrat  Lynn Woolsey

The University of San Francisco, a Jesuit institution, has a number of speakers lined up for their commencement ceremonies including Mayor of San Francisco Edwin Lee on May 18 and Congressman Lynn Woolsey on May 19. Both are supporters of abortion rights and same-sex “marriage.” Woolsey, who has served as a congresswoman since 1993, will receive an honorary degree from the university. She has been one of the most radical pro-abortion rights voices in Congress. Woolsey co-sponsored a bill in favor of funding embryonic stem cell research, she voted against restricting interstate transport of minors to get abortions, and even voted against banning partial-birth abortion.  Woolsey even compared abortions to a tonsillectomy, and she issued a statement in 2008 saying she was “thrilled” that the courts overturned the ban on same-sex “marriage” in California. In a 2009 Politico article, Woolsey said the U.S. bishops managed to “bully” legislators in the Obamacare debate, and she urged the IRS to investigate the bishops. San Francisco Mayor Lee has used his office to attack pro-life crisis pregnancy centers. Last November, he signed the Pregnancy Information Disclosure and Protection Ordinance that could force crisis pregnancy centers accused of “misleading” advertising to declare publicly whether they provide abortions, abortion referrals and “emergency contraception.” NARAL Pro-Choice state director Amy Everitt cheered the law and praised Lee “for taking a stand as a pro-choice leader.” Lee is also a public supporter of same-sex “marriage” who said the effort to legalize it was a “fight for civil rights in our country.”  In February he cheered the California Supreme Court ruling overturning the voter-approved Proposition 8, declaring, “I celebrate the decision by the Ninth Circuit Court today. This is a great day for marriage equality and a great day for California families. …San Francisco stands ready to begin marrying same-sex couples.”

Some Jesuit Universities "Expanding The Circle"

From March 3 through 6, an Expanding the Circle conference was held at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco. Expanding the Circle is an initiative of the California Institute of Integral Studies, and its stated purpose is “Creating an inclusive environment in higher education for LGBT/Q students and studies.” Catholic universities were well represented.

Titles of some of the workshops at the conference indicated the bias common to post-modern social science, that reality is a human construction: “Reimagining S@xual Desire and Spiritual Longing in Sacred Texts”; “Does G-d Really Hate Me: Reconstructing and Reinterpreting Challenging Religious Texts”; “(Re)vamping the Que@riculum: Issues in the Teaching of Language and S@xuality”; “Imagining Qu@er Selves: LGBTQ Literature, Libraries, and the Coming Out Process”; and the near-parodic “Fostering Multivariate Inclusion: Multiple Marginalized Identities and the Interplay of Sexuality.” Others, while more crudely titled, were quite clear: “That’s SO G@y: Queering the Curriculum in High Schools through Community Collaboration”; “Ripe for the Picking: Queer-Themed FIGs (First-Year Interest Groups)”, and “Building a Successful LGBTQ Program at Catholic Institutions.” The following Catholic schools participated: College of the Holy Cross, DePaul University, Dominican University, Georgetown University, Loyola Marymount University, Marian University, Marquette University, Santa Clara University, St. Anselm College, St. Edward’s University, St. Joseph’s University, St. Louis University, and the University of San Francisco.

The Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project will be offering presentation on “genderqu@er feminism” at the University of San Francisco’s upcoming global women’s rights forum. according to the organization’s web site.  California Catholic Daily reports that

opening night performers will include Jessica Robinson Love, the l@sbian same-s@x “married” director of Counterpulse, a “provocative” San Francisco theater space; Lenelle Moise, an openly lesbian woman who has performed at the National Qu@er Arts, Hom@agogo and Estrojam Festivals, and Amara Tabor-Smith, who is one of the curators for the June 2011 “This is What I Want” festival. “This is What I Want” is an official event of the 2011 “National Queer Arts Festival.”

Jesuits Sell Radio Station For $3,750,000.00

More than 400 people filled Presentation Theater to hear an explanation from USF President Father Stephen Privett about why the station was suddenly shut down.USF's president said he couldn't talk about the impending sale because the negotiations included non-disclosure terms. 

Privett added the radio station wasn't fulfilling the school's primary mission of educating students."We run a nursing school, we don't staff a hospital. We run a law school, we are not a law firm. We teach broadcasting, we are not fundamentally a radio station," explained Privett.

The station will continue online with its format of indie rock, foreign language and arts programming. But critics said that will not help listeners who don't have internet access. On Wednesday, the University of Southern California issued a statement saying it had purchased the rights to KUSF to air classical music. The selling price was $3.75 million.

Sr. Mary Hughes Recieves Award From USF

The Jesuit-run University of San Francisco honored the Leadership Conference of Women Religious at its fall commencement exercises on Friday, Dec. 17, in what the National Catholic Reporter characterized as “a signal to the Vatican.”In 2009, Cardinal William Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, announced that the Leadership Conference of Women Religious was under doctrinal review because of the “tenor and doctrinal content” of various addresses at the organization’s annual assemblies since 2001. That investigation is still under way, along with a series of apostolic visitations to women’s religious communities in the U.S. “We honor Catholic Women Religious to recognize their uncompromising commitment to serve those underrepresented and underprivileged with love and concern,” USF president Fr. Stephen Privett, S.J., was quoted as saying in the university’s announcement.

Controversial Sister To Accept Award At USF

Later this month, the University of San Francisco will honor the Catholic Health Association president who has received the scorn of pro-life Catholics across the country for enabling passage of the abortion-funding ObamaCare law. Sr. Carol Keehan, the president and CEO of the CHA, is “credited” with giving Rep. Bart Stupak and other supposedly pro-life Democrats the political and religious cover they needed to reverse their positions against the measure because it lacked any bill-wide language prohibiting abortion funding with taxpaper dollars. The Catholic bishops, who wanted to support a health care bill but couldn’t do so because of the taxpayer financing of abortion, says Keehan’s compromise resulted in “a wound to Catholic unity.”

The Cardinal Newman Society is urging USF to rescind the scheduled honor. “It is unspeakable that the University of San Francisco should choose to honor someone who severely damaged pro-life efforts in this nation and undermined the express will of the U.S. bishops,” said Patrick Reilly, the president of the Catholic watchdog group. “The Cardinal Newman Society calls on the President of USF to rescind the offer of this honor and speaking platform to Sr. Keehan.”

Staffing Changes At The University Of San Francisco

While Fr. Donal Godfrey, S.J. is no longer executive director of USF’s University Ministry, his replacement does not appear to be much of an improvement. On October 20, 2007, Ms. Julia Dowd, joined by members of USF’s LGBTQ Caucus, attended the "OutThere" conference at De Paul University. The conference’s program makes clear that its purpose was to create more effective advocacy for positions opposed to the Church’s teachings on Catholic universities. ..................Ms. Dowd continues to serve as an associate director of USF’s Lane Centers for Catholic Studies and Social thought. Over the past few years, the Lane Center has hosted such speakers as Fr. James Keenan, SJ, who, on April 28, 2003 spoke before the Massachusetts legislature "as a Catholic moral theologian" opposing Massachusetts Bill H. 3190, which would have defined marriage as between one man and one woman; Professor and ex-priest Paul Lakeland, who is best known for his support of Connecticut's recent attempt to have lay persons take over the governance of the Catholic Church; renegade Australian Bishop Geoffrey Robinson (despite Archbishop George Niederauer's orders that he was not to speak at any Catholic institutions in the archdiocese); professor and abortion advocate Sylvia Marcos, who believes in working to make abortion legal in countries where it is now illegal; the Rev. Ignacio Castuera, president of the Clergy Network of Planned Parenthood; and the Rev. Lisa Sargeant, chaplain of the now defunct Planned Parenthood Golden Gate.

Jesuit On Speaker Of The House Nancy Pelosi

What was it like delivering an invocation before Nancy Pelosi was sworn in as Speaker of the House?
The invitation from Speaker Pelosi to deliver the invocation at her swearing-in was a great grace and wonderful surprise. 

I have heard her say so many times in so many places that her parents raised her “to be holy.”  

Whether one agrees with her politics or not, she is a woman of faith whose commitment to public service reflects her desire to live St. Francis’ prayer -- to be “an instrument of peace” and “bring hope to those in despair and light to those in darkness.”  You may argue with the means but you cannot argue with her goals.

The Cardinal Newman Society compiled the following list of Catholic colleges and universities whose commencement speakers have publicly opposed or acted contrary to Catholic values on fundamental teachings. Link (here) to the full press release and list.

Boston College (Mass.)

Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of General Electric (GE), will be the commencement speaker and honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree recipient at Boston College’s commencement ceremony on May 24.  GE has an official company policy permitting experimenting on embryonic stem cells and last year launched a partnership with Geron Corp. to sell products derived from embryonic stem cells. 

Boston College Law School has invited U.S. Senator Scott Brown to address its May 28 commencement ceremony.  While running for office in 2002 in Massachusetts, Brown made public his position in support of legalized abortion with some restrictions.

College of the Holy Cross (Mass.)

Mark Shriver will be the commencement speaker and receive an honorary degree at the College of the Holy Cross on May 28.  Shriver is currently Vice President and managing director of Save the Children.  While a 2002 candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland, Shriver stated in a Washington Post interview, “Women's issues are critically important and I will continue to fight for a women's right to choose; family planning funds; maternal and child health funding and education for girls both here and abroad.”

Georgetown University (D.C.)

Baroness Brenda Hale will be the commencement speaker at Georgetown University Law Center on May 23.  In 2004, Hale became the first woman to serve in the British House of Lords as a “Lord of Appeal in Ordinary,” the equivalent of a U.K. supreme court justice.  Hale has “argued for gay civil partnerships and no-fault divorces” (The Guardian) and supports gay adoption as well as better rights for “cohabitees”.  The Independent reported in 2003 that Hale stated: “My present view is that there is a strong case for introducing a legal commitment between people who are unable to marry, principally gay and lesbian partners.”

Loyola Marymount University (Calif.)

The Governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick, was the commencement speaker at Loyola Marymount University on May 8.  Prior to serving as governor, Patrick was assistant attorney general for the civil rights division during Bill Clinton’s presidency.  Patrick’s campaign website boasts that that he "helped lead the fight to keep discrimination out of the Massachusetts constitution and preserved the right of same-sex couples to marry in Massachusetts."

Marlene Canter was the graduate commencement speaker for Loyola Marymount University on May 9.  She is a former member of the L.A. Unified School District board.  According to LifeSiteNews, Canter has called the legalization of same-sex marriage an "issue of simple fairness and basic human rights."  The same article reports that Canter has opposed a parental notification abortion law.

Loyola University Chicago (Ill.)

Clarence Page will be the commencement speaker for the School of Communication at Loyola University Chicago on May 14.  Page is a syndicated columnist and a senior member of The Chicago Tribune editorial board.  He has written that people who want to ban abortion are “yahoos”.  As a guest on the MSNBC program Hardball last year, Page described proposed pro-life language to the healthcare bill as “worse… because this is declaring that even a woman can’t use her own money to pay for an insurance plan that also covers abortion.”  He has stated, “I stand firmly on the pro-Roe side of the abortion debate.”  Page also supports same-sex “marriage” as evidenced by his editorial “In defense of same-sex marriage”.

University of San Francisco (Calif.)

On May 22, the University of San Francisco will host as commencement speaker Dale Minami, who will also receive an honorary degree.  A supporter of same-sex “marriage,” Minami is lead partner at Minami Tamaki LLP, which in December 2007 sponsored a fundraiser and donated funds to Asian Pacific Islander Equality, a group that advocates for same-sex “marriage.”

Isn't That Nice

On Oct. 28, 2009, California Catholic Daily reported that the Jesuit-run University of San Francisco’s Public Interest Law Foundation would honor California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno for his dissent in the Proposition 8 decision. The article also noted that every single PILF honoree since the event’s inception had been a supporter of same-sex ‘marriage,’ including Therese Stewart and Shannon Minter, whom USF honored in 2008 for winning the later-overturned 2008 “Marriages” case.

USF Law School’s support for same-sex ‘marriage’ continues unabated. On Feb. 26, the USF Law Review will sponsor a symposium called “The Future of Same Sex Marriage.” Panel members have yet to be announced, but it is reasonable to expect they will include USF Professor Julie Nice, who is listed as the “Faculty Expert” for issues pertaining to “Sexual Orientation and the Law” on the school’s “For the Media” page. That makes Professor Nice the school’s go-to-person when the media wants an opinion on same-sex ‘marriage.’

A good example of Professor Nice’s views was given in an interview on March 5, 2009 with KCBS radio, where she said the question before the California Supreme court, then hearing the Proposition 8 case, was a conflict between the “constitutional principles in the document or the current whim of the voters.” Professor Nice also gave an interview to KFOG radio’s Beat of the Bay “Gay & Lesbian Issues” show on February 28, 2009. At that time, she celebrated the “much greater civility” surrounding the discussion of the issue, which would probably be news to people such as 96-year-old Lorenzo Hoopes, who is currently being hounded off his volunteer position of 20 years at the Oakland City Theater Board because of his support for Proposition 8.

Jesuit Calls Instruction On Family Life By The Apostle Paul "Stupid"

The Jesuit Father Thomas J. Reese's claim to fame is the frequency with which he is quoted in news stories about the Catholic Church.

He seems to be in every journalist's Rolodex. For reporters with newspapers like the Washington Post and The New York Times, he is the go-to guy for the adversarial quote,

perhaps in nuanced disagreement with a statement by the Vatican; perhaps putting a different spin on it and always a liberal spin. That Sunday at St. Ignatius, he preached on the famous passage from the Epistle to the Ephesians, in which St. Paul says, "Husbands love your wives; wives obey your husbands." I was immediately curious. How would America's well-known apostle of liberal Catholicism handle that? Fr. Reese's main point was that "the historical context was different then." In the apostolic age, husbands needed to be told to love their wives because that understanding of conjugal love had not yet penetrated the Greco-Roman culture.

"Radical equality" between the sexes came in with Christianity.

At the time, "it was the men who would have been upset" by the Pauline injunction, "not the women." He continued in that vein, and probably there was a good deal of truth to what he said. I don't recall that he said anything about wives obeying their husbands. "People sometimes leave the Church for the wrong reasons,"

Fr. Reese added. "Taking a single passage and interpreting it in a fundamentalist way can get us into trouble." Then, in what was almost a throwaway line, he referred to "the stupid passage" in St. Paul's epistle.

I wasn't sure I had heard that right — "stupid passage," did he say? I decided to check with him after Mass. Fr. Reese was already receiving visitors at the sacristy door when I got there, and I resolved to keep it non-confrontational. I said something innocuous about the best passages of Scripture being ones that challenge the conventional wisdom of the day.

That was exactly what St. Paul was doing, he replied.

Devlin in 1909, as the fifth Saint Ignatius Church in San Francisco. When Saint Ignatius was completed in 1914, with its two towers visible from all parts of the city, it became not only a landmark to the University itself but also to the City of San Francisco. It is the University's spiritual home as well as a parish church for the surrounding community.
