Jesuit In The Wafer War

Jesuit Father Thomas J. Reese of the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University said Catholics "should never become captive to any single party. Every four years, we're the swing voters who decide elections and we should treasure that." He said Catholic clergy should continue the tradition of not running for office and bishops should continue to speak on issues while avoiding partisan politics. Father Reese said Catholics must realize that appeals to Catholic theology and religious authority will not be persuasive to everyone in the political arena where there is a plurality of views. "Things like excommunication and denying Communion because of votes are not only stupid, but harmful to the goals," he said, because it gets the candidate off message and makes certain issues appear to be of interest only to the Catholic community and not the wider electorate.

I'd like to know when was the last time Fr. "not captive to any single party" Reese voted for a Republican. In fact, I'd like to see data on how the Jesuits have voted for the past thirty years. The Jesuits are beholden to the Left, and many of them would rather die than vote for a conservative candidate.

Fr. Reese can't win w/some of you Christinists, can he?

Why do you want access to his secret ballot? That is so unAmerican.

Fr. Reese will win with clear thinkers and faithful Catholics when he stops speaking with a forked tongue and begins to support unequivocally the Faith of the Apostles as it has been handed down by the Magisterium. That Faith has public policy implications that make support for what the Democrat Party wants to do in this country intrinsically evil.

Got it Sawyer--and you are one of the "clear thinkers and faithful Catholics," right?

BTW, the Faith of the Apostles has been handed down by all of us, not just the Magisterium.

Anon 11:33, the Catechism #85 states: "The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ. This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome."

Note the word "alone" in the citation above. Others have handed down the Apostolic Faith, but only the Magisterium has handed it down in full, uncorrupted, authentically interpreted and legitimately developed form.

Therefore adherence to the Apostolic Faith as handed down by the Magisterium is the sole norm for clear thinking, faithful Catholics.

The Jesuits (and many American lay theologians) frequently act, speak and write as if they are a parallel magisterium in the Church, which is nonsense. They mislead many.

Perhaps you are one of them.

"Perhaps you are one of them." Nice touch.

You are assigning a totalizing aspect to the word "interpretation." It is premised of several pre-conditions (or, more accurately, part of the larger process) which includes " sensus fidelium."

If you proof that Fr. Reese has violated #85 please do provide it.

At the urging of the Holy See, Fr. Reese was fired from being editor of "America" because he permitted the magazine to publish articles that were at odds with Catholic Faith.

Unfortunately, firing Reese didn't solve the problems nor change the direction of "America". An editor from "Homiletic and Pastoral Review" would have to take over the helm at "America" for that magazine to become truly Catholic.

Sawyer--The Holy See isn't the Magisterium.
