In 1758, a parish (Conewago Chapel) near Hanover, Pa., sent Jesuit priests to Hagerstown. For the next 28 years, priests celebrated Masses in private homes. A log chapel was erected on the present site at 224 W. Washington St. in 1794. That same year, land was acquired for a cemetery.
