Pope Benedict XVI has named 32 prelates to participate in the 12th ordinary assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which will take place in Rome in October. The Synod will discuss the Word of God.
The world's episcopal conferences appoint their own representatives to participate in the Synod. Along with those bishops, the Pope named cardinals and bishops from the Roman Curia and from dioceses around the world. He also named Father Adolfo Nicolas, the superior general of the Jesuit order; and Father Julian Carron, the head of the Communion and Liberation movement.
Pope Benedict's appointments, announced September 6, also include a large number of expert and auditors to assist the bishops at the Synod. Among those named were Scripture scholars and lay leaders such as Carl Anderson, the Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus; Maria, Voce, the head of the Focolare movement; and Andrea Riccardi, the founder and leader of the St. Egidio community.
