In 1526
St. Ignatius of Loyola was arrested again and imprisoned for six weeks. Though pronounced innocent, he was forbidden to teach anything at all. So he left
Alcalá for the
university at Salamanca. Within two weeks of his arrival he was in prison again, bound foot to foot with other prisoners and fastened to a stake in the middle of the cell. Again, his text of the Spiritual Exercises was examined.
His credentials were more suspect than his doctrine.
Finally, he was set free and told he could preach, but could not discuss the difference between mortal and venial sin. So, in the winter of 1528, he left Spain, walked through
"great and fearful wars," and arrived at the
University of Paris.
