Cardinal Avery Dulles, SJ, Will Be Interred

The late Cardinal Avery Dulles, SJ, will be interred June 1 in the Jesuit Cemetery at Our Lady of the Martyrs Shrine in Auriesville, which is approximately 40 miles west of Albany. He will be remembered at the shrine's Coliseum during a 2 p.m. memorial Mass, which is open to the public.

Cardinal Dulles, one of the nation's leading theologians and church authors, died Dec. 12, 2008, at the age of 90. He was born Aug. 24, 1918, in Auburn to a prominent Presbyterian family and later converted to Catholicism. In 2001 Pope John Paul II named him a cardinal, making him the first U.S. priest ever named a cardinal in honor of his service as a theologian, according to Catholic News Service.

Cardinal Dulles authored 22 books and more than 700 articles, and was a professor of religion and society at Fordham University in New York City. He visited Rochester in 2004 to celebrate the annual diocesan Red Mass for lawyers, judges and members of the legal community.
