Halifax-born priest to lead Jesuit order

A Jesuit priest who was born in Halifax has been named to head up English Canada’s Jesuit order. Father James Webb, 63, will become provincial superior of the Jesuits in English Canada later this summer. The announcement was made Friday by Father Adolfo Nicolas, superior general of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). The graduate of St. Francis Xavier University spent most of his formative years in Antigonish. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1964 and was ordained in 1973. He succeeds Father Jean-Marc Laporte, who has served in the position since 2002. Father Webb will take up his duties July 31.
