[In his homily at the beginning of the conclave, Cardinal Ratzinger] spoke of the church as a "little boat of Christian thought" tossed around on waves of "extreme" modern tendencies. And he spoke of the world as a "dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as for certain." It was all reminiscent for me of another time and place, when one of his illustrious predecessors, the more-than-somewhat reactionary Pius IX, actually condemned all modern progress in the Syllabus of Errors published in the late 19th century. This even included the church's condemnation of electricity as evil! No, I am not kidding! [Fr. John Loftus, S.J., homily at Jesuit Urban Center, Boston, 5-14-05]
The Society of Jesus has always been in communion with the Holy Father and we are happy to be so. Between spouses there are always difficulties ... Only people who love each other can hurt each other. -- V. Rev. Adolfo Nicolás, S.J.

"[Pope John Paul II] is kind of a conflicted individual," said the Rev. John W. O'Malley, S.J., a professor of historical theology at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology, in Cambridge, Mass. "Deep, deep, deep down, his heart is in the right place, but he's caught in his own conservative culture," said O'Malley, who has written about what he calls the "papalization" of Catholicism -- namely, the trend in the past two centuries to view the papacy as the defining characteristic of Catholicism. [David Gibson, New Jersey Star Ledger, 5-2-01]

The pope's speech, [Fr. John Paris, S.J.] said, is "causing mischief" and being interpreted with too much alarm by those who aren't Catholic. "The problem is that non-Catholics think when the pope says 'Jump,' we all say, 'How high?' " he said. [St. Petersburg Times, 5-1-04]

Like many Jesuits down the centuries, Barrett made no attempt to disguise his chafing at the Vatican's hierarchical politics and social conservatism -- going so far as to declare on the day of the attempted assassination of the Pope, in a bellow that filled a London restaurant, that "the only thing wrong with that bloody Turk was that he couldn't shoot straight". The religious affairs correspondent of The Sunday Times, seated at a nearby table, turned beetroot. [Times of London, 1-15-04]
