Follow The Money That Supports Abortion

Three laymen recently named presidents of Jesuit universities have contributed to candidates who favor legalized abortion, according to federal election records. David W. Burcham, the new president of Loyola Marymount University, donated $500 to the presidential campaign of John Edwards in 2003 and $250 to the campaign of Rep. Maxine Waters in 2009. John Hurley, the new president of Canisius College, has donated $4,500 to the campaign of Rep. Brian Higgins since 2004. Thayne McCulloh, the new president of Gonzaga University, donated $1,500 to Obama for America and the Obama Victory Fund in 2008.

That ignorant people post comments on blogs.

With some politicians, business administrators more or less have to make donations.

"...more or less have to make donations."

Please elaborate.

Anonymous #2 is the ignorant one.

People don't "have" to do anything "more or less".

People make up their own minds what to do.

Catholics make up their own minds whether to be Catholic or whether not to be.

Catholics who administer Church institutions have an especially grave obligation to uphold Catholic faith and doctrine and be outstanding examples of Catholic discipleship. Their poor example gives scandal.

Some politicians will go out of their way to retaliate against companies and institutions that don't give "campaign contributions."

In fact, some times politicians will announce their intent to rewrite laws, and then work to really hurt those who don't contribute after the announcement when they rewrite laws.

Individuals generally make donations because they like a politician's platform. People at big companies and the like sometimes make them because they don't really have a choice.

Ignorance such as that evinced by anonymouses #1 and #4 is a scandal that reflects poorly on the kneejerk wannabe SuperCatholics.

Anonymous #5, instead of "some" politicians you should have written "left-wing" politicians.

Only the left is cutthroat like that because the left has to buy/intimidate/lie in order to win elections.

People of courage stand up to crap like that. People who lack a pair or who don't care about Catholic faith much capitulate.

Please get the help you need.

Anon, 6:32, All of us who believe in and try to follow Christ are crazy by the world's standards. Not just Anon 6. That's what they said about Jesus too. Thanks for the confirmation.

If Satan had tempted Christ by threatening a particular life, would you say that “life” is the most important value in that situation?

I would hope that you answer “I don’t know” since that answer reflects an appropriate level of humility about the particular evil Satan had in mind and the particular life that was being threatened.

So judgment is involved, as opposed to choosing some memorized response.

So there are many values and many trade-offs to consider. Judgment is expected from us. And it is not sufficient to consider only one or two values. And it is not sufficient to ignore our obligation to use judgment. And it is not sufficient to ignore “love your neighbor” with the associated respect for their values.

Anon 10:46

There is a difference between following Christ, and not the ways of the world, and in living in a world of make believe and lies.

When you make claims that are not true, and which no halfway serious person believes, it is clear that you are with the latter. It is not Christ who is described as the father of lies.

The sooner you accept that you need psychiatric help and get it, the better for you.

Do not insult Christ by insinuating that he legitimizes your delusions.

Anon 4:52 -- The only ones making untrue claims here are:

1. the anon who claimed that Jesuits are "more or less" forced to donate against conscience.

2. TonyD -- who lied by misrepresing himself as a Catholic and believer in Christ. Now he pretends to lecture us on the importance of making a "judgment" but fails to add that he believes that 2 contradictory statements (and therefore 2 contradictory judgments) can both be true.

Anon 4:52AM,
Things are not so clear cut as they seem. It is a false dichotomy to separate "following Christ" from "the ways of the world, and in living in a world of make believe and lies".

In fact, Christ shared few things and many things were left unsaid. Some of the things left unsaid reflect a complexity that we cannot understand from this construct. Also left unsaid is how Christ is to return. It doesn't happen in the way that we believe -- and our lack of understanding prevents our seeing things that are right in front of us.

A genuine community value expresses the values of our neighbors -- even when those values aren't traditional biblical values. So God judges our response to community values. And since the "world of make-believe and lies" and "the ways of the world" are often community values, we are judged on our response to those values. We are expected to respect genuine community values.

What I am really discussing is just one reason for pain, punishment, and suffering. And, unfortunately, it is just one reason. We are told very little. Even after we become proficient at "love your neighbor" we will still be unworthy. (Or, stated another way, we will still be punished.)
