Jesuit Involved In Active Politcal Campaigning And Demonstrations In Chile

Midweek Musings
Rev. Christopher Ney
An excerpt.
I was particularly moved by a group that used nonviolent direct action in the style of Martin Luther King or Mahatma Gandhi to protest torture. Organized by a Jesuit priest, Father Jose Aldunate, the members of the Sebastian Acevedo (Sebatian Acevedo committed suicide by setting himself ablaze) Movement Against Torture put their bodies on the line to say that torture is wrong. They carried out a series of actions — often at the site of clandestine jails and frequently in the face of police billy clubs, water canons and tear gas. But they did not strike back and they did not give up. They inspired me to return to Chile a few years later to write my seminary thesis about their work.

Readjusting the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius
By Fr. Jose Aldunate (here)

An excerpt
.
Theoretically, as well as in practise, much work has been done to modernize the SE. In the biblical, theological and social fields eminent Jesuits have accomplished great works, and in teaching through directories such as the Latin America Directory. But I feel that we have to insist on making sure that the Spiritual Exercises promote justice, and that vocations are discerned in the light of this. With this objective I would like to make some suggestions.

Read the whole article by Fr. Aldunate, it clearly points out the fundamental problem within the Society, a redefining and unraveling of the Spiritual Exercises.
