St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke, "Rode's" Georgetowns Fr. Phan

"The Rode Effect"
After consultation with St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke, the Aquinas Institute of Theology has canceled its annual Aquinas Lecture for 2008. The Rev. Peter Phan, a Georgetown University professor and former president of the Catholic Theological Society of America, was scheduled to give the prestigious lecture in about three weeks.

I'm glad to see the Archbishop and the Aquinas Institute are in accord. The Aquinas Institute (Dominican run) is on Saint Louis University's (a Jesuit university) campus and the Archbishop sends the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary students to SLU for philosophy.

Call me ignorant ... I can't quite see how this would be part of "the Rode effect" (though it is certainly welcome).

While on SLU's campus (in a kickass renovated factory; alas, the chapel is lacking in appeal), Aquinas is an independent institute run by the Dominicans. The decision came from AI's new prez, who has a reputation as an intelligent, faithful priest and all-around good guy. I see this more as part of the "B16 effect" that, God willing, is spreading throughout the church.

We can pray that the jebbies will heed Rode's words; remember, that homily was addressed to EVERY jesuit, not just the relative handful at GC35 (largely in attendance without roman collars, from the pics I've seen. Sigh.)

Rode does work for B16. "Rode effect" is something that happens after his homily that is might not have happen before his homily. Fr. Phan the Georgetown theologian was scheduled most likely months ago. Archbishop Burke may have ended Fr. Phan's appearance without any statement by Rode. I do however think we will see more of things of a Rode-ish nature in the future.

Interesting views here on Raymond Burke. I like the last guy and one of the first one's best.
