Irish Jesuit Calls For, "Real Revolution In Our Society"

Jesuit calls for a social revolution

A Catholic priest and author has called for a social revolution to overcome Ireland's economic slide towards national financial and moral suicide.

"The economic crisis is of such scale that it calls not for limited reform but for a real revolution in our society's priorities, policies and structures,''
Jesuit theologian, Fr Gerry O'Hanlon, said yesterday in Dublin. Fr O'Hanlon was speaking at the launch of his new book, 'The Recession and God: Reading the Signs of the Times'.

"Obviously, the most urgent challenge is to re-stabilise our economy," said Fr O'Hanlon, the acting director of the Jesuits' Faith and Justice unit. "But it is essential we also try to understand how we have come to where we are now and how we might avoid a similar situation developing in the future. Our natural preoccupation with short-term measures should not jeopardise this more long-term task." Fr O'Hanlon called for a new vision for Irish society that favoured the common good and solidarity with people on the margins.
