Jesuit Founded NGO In Colombia And Its Slain Fisherman

BOGOTA -- Unknown persons murdered the leader of a fishermen's association that is part of the program for peace and development in the Magdalena River basin in northern Colombia, authorities said Friday.

Luis Alberto Arango was shot to death Thursday in Barrancabermeja, a port on the Magdalena that is home to Colombia's main complex of oil refineries.

According to a brief police report, Arango was killed by a group of men on motorcycles.

The association presided over by the slain leader was linked to the Program for Development and Peace in the Middle Magdalena, or PDPMM, founded in 1995 as an initiative of the Jesuits, the U.N. Development Program and the World Bank with support from the Colombian government and state oil company Ecopetrol.

El PDPMM, which in 2001 won the National Peace Prize, sponsors projects in 29 municipalities in four provinces and counts the European Union among its chief contributors.
