Director Of Homeland Security Is A Santa Clara University Graduate

Eight alumni of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities currently serve in appointed positions to U.S. President Barack Obama's administration and fifty four alumni are current members of the 111th U.S. Congress. Members of the Obama administration from AJCU institutions include Central Intelligence Agency Director Leon E. Panetta (Santa Clara University, 1960, BA) and Department of Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates

(Georgetown University, 1974, PhD).

From the Department of Education are Assistant Secretary for Legislation and Congressional Affairs Gabriella Gomez (Loyola Marymount University, 1995, BA) Under Secretary Martha Kanter (University of San Francisco, 1989, EdD), Senior Advisor to the Secretary Bob Shireman (University of San Francisco, 1986, MPA) and Office of Legislation and Congressional Affairs Deputy Assistant Secretary Julius Lloyd Horwich (Georgetown University 1986, BSFS).

Other departments with Jesuit alumni are the Department of Homeland Security with Secretary Janet A. Napolitano (Santa Clara University, 1979, BA) and the Department of Labor with Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training Jane Oates (Boston College, 1975, BA).

111th U.S. Congress

Ten percent of the 111th U.S. Congress are Jesuit college and university alumni/ae. Among the 535 Members of the 111th U.S. Congress, 54 of them are alumni/ae of Jesuit institutions.

There are thirteen Jesuit alumni/ae in the Senate and forty one in the House of Representatives. Among the top leadership, both the Majority and Minority Leaders in the House of Representatives, Congressmen Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and John Boehner (R-OH) respectively, the Senate Assistant Majority Leader, Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL), and the Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Special Assistant to the Speaker, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), are all Jesuit alumni.

Of these 54 alumni/ae, 35 received graduate or professional degrees from Jesuit universities. There are 16 Jesuit institutions represented by alumni/ae in the U.S. Congress. Georgetown University has the most alumni/ae with a total of eighteen, followed by Boston College with eight, and the College of the Holy Cross and Fordham University with four each.

Of note, Anh "Joseph" Cao, a graduate of Fordham University and Loyola University New Orleans, is the first Vietnamese-American member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Game Changer In Massachusetts Is A Boston College Law School Graduate

Scott Philip Brown (b. September 12, 1959)^[1] is a Republican Massachusetts State Senator representing the Norfolk, Bristol & Middlesex District since 2004.^[2] He is the Republican candidate to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the death of Ted Kennedy in the upcoming 2010 U.S. Senate special election. While initially trailing Martha Coakley (the current Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts) in polling by large numbers, the Republican closed the gap in January 2010, running even or ahead of Coakley in recent independent and internal polling.^[3][4][5][6]

Brown is a graduate of Wakefield High School (1977), Tufts University (1981), and Boston College Law School (1985).

Brown on abortion

Brown supports Roe v. Wade, calling it "the law of the land", and the right to legalized abortion. He endorses restricting or banning intact dilation and extraction, known by its opponents as partial-birth abortion, and creating parental consent laws for minors who seek an abortion. He opposes the idea of a litmus test on abortion-related issues in Supreme Court confirmations.^[1] He also opposes federal funding for elective abortions in accordance with the Hyde Amendment.^[3] The Boston Globe has described his positions on abortion as "nuanced".^[1]

Brown on religion

Brown and his family are Protestant Christians. They worship at New England Chapel in Franklin, which is a member of the Christian Reformed Church in North America. They also have a relationship with an order of Cistercian Catholic nuns at Mt. St. Mary’s Abbey in Wrentham. The Brown family has raised over five million dollars for them, leading to the construction of solar panels, a wind turbine, and a candy manufacturing plant operated by the order. Sister Katie McNamara has said, "[w]e pray for them every day".^[1].

My God! He Is A "Republican" The Horror!

Anh "Joseph" Quang Cao, a 41-year-old Republican, defeated Democratic Rep. William J. Jefferson in a Dec. 6 runoff election to represent Louisiana's 2nd District. Jefferson had held the seat since 1991, and no Republican has represented the congressional district that includes New Orleans since 1890.

Cao, pronounced Gow, was named in January 2003 to a four-year term on the advisory council, a 63-member group of laymen and laywomen, religious men and women, diocesan priests and bishops that meets twice a year to review documentation and offer recommendations on matters before the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

A member of Mary Queen of Vietnam Parish in New Orleans, Cao told The Associated Press that his run for political office was motivated by his Catholic faith.

"It was something that I was called to do, literally, in the religion sense," he said.

According to a biography on his campaign Web site, Cao was born in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam, the fifth of eight children. He came to the United States in 1975 at the age of 8 and settled in the Houston area. He graduated from Jersey Village High School in Houston and earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in 1990.

Cao spent the next six years as a Jesuit seminarian, beginning his studies for the priesthood in Louisiana and eventually earning a master's degree in philosophy from Fordham University in New York in 1995. A year later, after returning to New Orleans to teach philosophy and ethics at Loyola University, he left the Society of Jesus and taught at a parochial school in Virginia.

9% Of Congress Is Jesuit Educated, 30% Of Congress Is Catholic

33 out of the 51 of these Jesuit educated members are committed to legislating pro abortion laws.

The 111th Congress, sworn in last week, features 51 members (out of 535) who are Jesuit-educated, according to the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Georgetown has by far the most alumni at the Capitol -- 18 -- but local favorites Boston College and the College of the Holy Cross have their share, with six and four graduates in Congress, respectively.

The BC alumni are all Democrats, including, from Massachusetts, Senator John F. Kerry (JD 1976), Representative Michael Capuano (JD 1977), Representative William D. Delahunt (JD 1967) and Representative Edward J. Markey (BA 1968; JD 1972). The others are Representative Paul W. Hodes of New Hampshire (JD 1978) and Representative Robert C. Scott of Virginia (JD 1973). (UPDATE: An alert reader reminds me that Representative Stephen F. Lynch, also a Massachusetts Democrat, received a law degree from BC (in 1991). I have no idea why he's not on the AJCU list, but that increases BC's number to 7, and the overall number of Jesuit college and university grads in Congress to 51.)

The Holy Cross alumni, also all Democrats, are Senator Robert P. Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania (BA 1982), Representative Timothy H. Bishop of New York (BA 1972), Representative James P. Moran of Virginia (BA 1967) and Representative Peter Welch of Vermont (BA 1969).

In another analysis of the makeup of Congress, the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life looked at the religious makeup of the House and Senate. A few highlights from the report:

"Members of Congress are much more likely than the public overall to say they are affiliated with a particular religion."

The Congress is mostly Protestant (54.7%), mirroring the nation, but the Protestants are from multiple denominations; Baptists are underrepresented, while Episcopalians, Methodists and Presbyterians are overrepresented when compared to their presence in the national population.

"Catholics are the single largest religious group in the 111th Congress. Catholics, who account for nearly one-quarter of the U.S. adult population, make up about 30% of Congress."

"Jews, who account for just 1.7% of the U.S. adult population, make up 8.4% of Congress, including just over 13% of the Senate."

There are two Muslims and two Buddhists in Congress; both groups are slightly underrepresented, as are Hindus (there are no Hindu members of Congress).

Fifty-One Members of the 111th U.S. Congress are Jesuit College and University Alumni/ae

More than nine percent of the 111th U.S. Congress are Jesuit College and University alumni/ae, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) reports. Among the 535 Members of the 111th U.S. Congress, 51 of them, or more than nine percent, are alumni/ae of Jesuit institutions.

There are eleven Jesuit alumni/ae in the Senate and 40 in the House of Representatives. Among the top leadership, both the Majority and Minority Leaders in the House of Representatives, Congressmen Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and John Boehner (R-OH) respectively, the Senate Assistant Majority Leader, Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL), and the Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Special Assistant to the Speaker, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), are all Jesuit alumni.
