Jesuit Magic

Limerick priest hits out at magic show
Fr Terry O'Connell
By John Hogan
A LIMERICK priest has said allowing a pair of magicians to take part in a school talent show, which is raising funds for a pilgrimage to Lourdes, is a "thundering disgrace". "Magic is considered an abhorrence in the Old Testament and it's appalling to think that it's being used to support a church trip," said Fr Terry O'Connell, curate in St Patrick's parish in the City. The Crescent Talent Show takes place this Friday in the school with all proceeds going towards sending a team of young helpers to Lourdes as part of the Limerick Diocesan Pilgrimage. As well as a host of comedians, singers and dancers, the show will feature a magic show from sixth year student Rachel Andrews and her sister Ruth who is in second year. Rachel and Ruth are the daughters of popular Limerick magician, Terence Andrews.

"I'm absolutely disgusted by this, it runs contrary to my belief and I would distance myself from the tour. It's particularly disappointing that this is being supported by a Jesuit school. Magic is seen as an abomination by the Catholic Church and it's a thundering disgrace that it's being used in this way," said Fr O'Connell.

Principal of Crescent College, Dermot Cowhey, said he fully backed the student organisers of the talent show and added that there was no question of asking the magicians to withdraw their entry. "I wouldn't be aware of the theological objections that Fr O'Connell would have but I do believe that we need to focus on is what the funds are going towards and that is sending sick children to Lourdes," said Principal Cowhey. The Crescent Talent Show will go ahead as planned this Friday evening and there are still some tickets available from the school's reception at 229655 or from the Limerick Pastoral Centre on 400133.

I think it might be well worth noting here the response of the Diocese of Limerick to Fr Terrys outburst. Fr Terry was definitely not representing the viewpoint of Limerick clergy or Limerick Catholics!!!!

PS - the girls recieved a standing ovation on the night from a huge audience - including many priests!

The press release below was copied from the wesbite of the diocese:

The Clergy involved in the Lourdes Pilgrimage and the Local Parish Clergy wish to gratefully acknowledge the generosity of spirit of all of those students from Crescent College Comprehensive involved in both organising and participating in the Talent Show scheduled for 07/03/2008.

Our understanding is that the young people involved will provide a display of skills and offer light entertainment for the audience present. We wish the event every success.

In conclusion we want to acknowledge and affirm those students who are the focus of this media attention for their recognised involvement in parish activities. Finally we hope and pray that this misunderstanding will not cause any undue distress.
