The Sacred Heart of Jesus has been part of the mission and spirituality of the Society of Jesus, aka the Jesuits.
But lately the devotion has been viewed by many in as "outmoded" in the post-Vatican II Catholic world. Too many kitschy dime-store paintings of the Sacred Heart, too many cheesy statues where Jesus has a dopey look on his face,
seemed to have doomed this devotion to spiritual obscurity and religious irrelevance.

The Society of Jesus is outmoded in a post-Vatican II reform of the reform. I bet those kitschy pictures of which Fr. Martin speaks will be around after the Society's demise.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Fr. Martin. Most images of the Sacred Heart are horrible art, and diminish an otherwise worthy devotion.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone actually read Fr. Martin's post? He was very positive about the "sacred heart" practices. His initial observations were simply an acknowledgment of public perspectives.
