Jescom introduces Negroponte and XO laptop to Rome

The communication secretariat hosted a conference that presented M.I.T. Professor Nicholas Negroponte and his amazing laptop computer to an audience that included people from religious orders, Vatican offices and Italian businesses on October 29, 2007. In this 43 minute podcast Negroponte discusses the history of the XO laptop, more commonly known in the press as the "One Hundred Dollar Laptop." He also explains its key points such as low power consumption, high-quality screen, durability and advanced connectivity.

Along the way he answers a number of questions such as whether this XO laptop is a full-fledged computer (the answer: yes it is, and it can run Windows and Linux, do email, browse the web.) He spends a great amount of time explaining the educational philosophy and goals which he considers to be more important than the technology itself.
The One Laptop Per Child non-profit organization (OLPC) originally planned to release the computers just through governments, but it has recently reached out to religious orders and other groups to implement the educational changes that the laptops represent.
