Jesuits In Afganistan

The Jesuits find themselves back in Afghanistan after a centuries-long interval. The first to go there, Catalan Father Antonio Montserrat, went in 1581. Portuguese Jesuit Brother Bento de Goes stayed briefly in Kabul sometime later. Other Jesuits were there for a short time in the 18th century. In July 2003, Father D'Souza's predecessor, Father Lisbert D'Souza, sent four priests to explore the possibility of contributing to the nation's development after years of civil warfare and the ouster of the Taliban government in late 2001 by a U.S.-led coalition.
